TURRONES AND CAKES - JOSÉ MORANT I SIRVENT (LO TORRONERO)

For more than half a century our products have been a symbol of guaranteed supreme quality.
It was in 1883 when Vicente Morant decided to go to Tortosa for a few days around Christmas to sell the home-made products he made in his home town of Jijona.
These delights were the famous turrón de Jijona (soft fudge-like candy), the turrón de Alicante (hard nougat-like candy), and the nieve (or marzipan), the egg white turrón (or cream), the glory cakes (which taste... well, glorious), panes de Cádiz (cakes), grageas (small candies) of sugar-coated pine nuts, sugared almonds, his famous garrapiñadas (toasted almond, sugar and cinnamon) and the no less famous bovets de massapà (marzipan animal figures).
Around 1910, his son José Morant Sirvent (who would give his name to the brand and register it), continued his father's activity: he produced the turrones and cakes with his family in Jijona and, for the next few years, developed the business selling them in spots around Tortosa (on the climb up to the puente del Estado, in the porches of the plaza del Ángel, in the doorway of the home of doctor Sabaté) until establishing himself in the arcade of number 2 Cervantes Street, in 1940. In 1958 his son, José Morant Vidal, worked alongside him until 1970. From then on and for the next few years the son continued going to Tortosa, not with his father but with his wife, Amalia Ramos, and their son, José Luis Morant Ramos, uninterruptedly until 1999, when the son married Maribel Miralles and the couple took over the business. And they have a son too, Jordi Morant Miralles.
They moved to the premises immediately adjoining the arcade, fitted out a small shop and also started the summer task of making horchatas (tiger nut and almond drink), granizados (crushed ice drinks) and ice creams, and they have had a resounding success to this day thanks to the know-how of Maribel Miralles.
Until today, there have been four generations of the same family of turroneros, fudge and candy makers, who have produced and sweetened the lives of everyone who has been able to apprecite their exquisite products. Thanks to everyone for trusting in us. Good health!
